Words and Phrases
● a number of years ▶︎長年
– Several years, or many years.
For example, we’ve been using smartphones for a number
of years now.
● competitive ▶︎競争が激しい
– Having a lot of competition.
Mr. Grisdale said that IT is a competitive filed, meaning
that there’re many qualified people who are trying to
get similar jobs.
● figure ▶︎思う
– To think, to expect something.
Mr. Grisdale said, “I figured that I needed to have an extra
edge advantage.” So he thought or imagined that he
would need the extra advantage.
– You can use it when you’re expecting an outcome.
For example, I figured that I’d get started on my work early,
so I can’t impress the boss.
● advantage ▶︎利点
– A condition that gives a greater chance of success.
Having an edge over others.
– Mr. Grisdale thought that being able to speak Japanese
would be an advantage over others seeking jobs in IT field.
● resume ▶︎履歴書
– A resume is a document used when applying for a job that
lists qualifications for the position.
This can include work history, education, and other relevant
accomplishments.
– A resume is used in the UK and Canada when applying for
jobs. But in the UK they may use a similar validation called
“CV.”
● selfish ▶︎利己的な
– Thinking about oneself, concerned mainly about one’s gains
or happiness. Mr. Grisdale claimed his motivations for learning
Japanese were selfish, because it would help him get a better job.
● spark ▶︎きっかけ
– The start of something big.
When talking about fire, we can rub two dry pieces of wood to
create sparks. These sparks turn into a bigger fire.
Using this image, a spark is the start of something bigger.
