Words and Phrases
● persistence ▶︎粘り強さ
– Continuing even when it’s difficult, to persevere.
Continuing even when people are opposed or negative.
Persistence is a noun.
The verb form is to persist.
The adjective form is persistent.
● walk one’s talk ▶︎有言実行する
– To walk one’s talk is to do exactly what you said.
In the interview, Melati said “we had to walk our talk.”
This means they had to show action to support
what they said, and show meaningfulness.
● inspiration ▶︎着想
– Motivation, a great idea.
Inspiration inspires or encourages someone to do
something good while feeling good in the process.
– For example, her paintings take inspiration from the original
Dutch masters.
● insightful ▶︎洞察力に富んだ
– Perceptive.
If something is insightful, it gives a deeper understanding of
a complicated subject.
– Melati said that raising global awareness was an insightful
experience. In other words, she learned more, and gained
a deeper understanding.
● learning curve ▶︎学習曲線、自らの誤りから学習する過程
– A learning curve describes the rate or time it takes to learn
something. This looks like an upward curve on a graph.
When a person starts to learn something new, they start
from zero, but slowly over time the line will start to go up.
– Used in conversation, this can mean that learning something
new takes time.
