7月のテーマは基本動詞④

👉７月も…
引き続き基本動詞のイメージをつかみ
「日本語を経由せず、英語を使う力」を養います。

Lesson 78 show, explain, illustrate, demonstrate

👉 show – その中心は「見せる」ビジュアルに重きがある
👉 explain – 「平ら (plain)にする」わかりづらい内容を「平ら」にして見晴らしをよくする
👉 illustrate – 「わかりやすく説明する」に焦点がある動詞
👉 demonstrate – 「実物を使いながら説明する」

Opening で

Roza
▶︎ Akino Roza です。

Chris
▶︎ Hi, guys. Chris McVay here. As you all know, I’m totally innocent.

Roza
▶︎ I believe you are, Chris.

Dialogue で

① I can’t believe you came to see me after all these years.
👉 さあ、I can’t believe 「信じられません」まあ、ここまでは大概の方はですね、
言えるんじゃないでしょうか。でも、何を信じられないのか、その内容をこのように
you came to see me after all these years と「節」を続けて説明をすることも
出来なくては、困ります。一生懸命練習して下さいね。

② But I knew I‘d see you again.
👉さあ、I knew I’d see you again. ここでは時制の一致が行われていますよね。
I knew – knew が過去ですので、I will の will が would になって I would see
you となっているわけですね。

③ I’ll show you some old pictures on my tablet.
👉さあ、on my tablet – tablet はまあ基本的にはこう「板」のような形をして
いますよね、従って、on が選ばれているというわけです。

④ But we’re still young at heart.
👉さあ、young at heart という表現を覚えておきましょう。
「気が若い、心が若い」というわけですね。

Now I think the explanation given by Onishi Sensei is really clear
for each one. So keep those images right in front of your mind
as we practice together. OK?

・demonstrate how to use the machine
Now it’s obvious here, isn’t it? If it’s a machine, we really want
hands-on visual explanation. So “demonstrate” is the perfect verb
for this type of example. So once again, after me.

▶︎ Don’t forget to grab the basic image of these verbs, ‘cause
they’re very important. And if you grasp the image, it will help you
to use them in the right context.
