・「形容詞」「副詞」を終え、先週に引き続き、今週も「not」を取り上げています。
Lesson 116 否定②：否定は「前」が定位置
Opening で
Roza
▶︎Hey, everyone. Akino Roza here. Chris, I think Sensei’s
opening was kind of a disaster, actually.
Chris
▶︎Umm. I agree. I’ve had a bout of coughing.
Chris McVay here. Let’s get started.
Dialogue で
① How was the concert on Saturday?
👉 How は、「様子」をたずねるwh語。このように感想を
聞くこともできます。しっかり覚えましょう。
👉そして、on Saturday – 曜日の前の on が出てきました。
もちろん「曜日」というのは、ある程度の時間幅をもっていますから、
stage のように感じられるわけです。そして、「その上に」という
感触なんです。
② uncontrollable bouts
👉ますは、uncontrollable「コントロールすることのできない」
という意味です。-able と un- が使われた単語です。
👉 bout という単語は「発作」あるいは、ボクシングなどの試合を意味
する単語なんですが、共通したイメージは、何があるんでしょうかね。
Onishi
▶︎Hey, guys. What’s the nuance of “bout” here?
Chris
▶︎Well, it’s a bit difficult. But the origin is a circuit, something
goes around and around and around. So in that case, it’s difficult
to stop. And by extension, it’s used for boxing as you mention,
also illness like a bout of the flu, or in this dialogue a bout of coughing.
Roza
▶︎Yeah, I would say that’s “a…bout,” right?

👉「まあ、そうゆうこと、よく起こりますよね」 – この雰囲気
の文なんです。しっかり全文覚えておいてください。
よく使われる文です。

④ the better player の表現
👉比較級に the がついているのは
「2人の選手のうちの better な方」- そこから１つに決まる the
が使われている、というわけなんです。
Ending

but because I can easily go to the bathroom.

▶︎Actually, I’m exactly the same. You know, at 12-and-half-
an-hour flight from Tokyo to London, I will sit on the isle
if at all possible.
