👉1月は、限定詞・名詞関連・接続詞のイメージについて学習します。
今週も、「名詞関連」です。

Lesson 194 可算・不可算で意味が変わる名詞

👉 room：可算[ 部屋 ] / 不可算 [ スペース・空間 ] など

Opening で

Roza
▶︎ Hey, everyone. Akino Roza here. We’d get going, or we’ll be late for
our program.

Chris
▶︎ Chris McVay here. Actually, Roza, I have a dental appointment.
Yeah, we’d better get going indeed.

Dialogue で

① Whoa, this dresser looks bigger than I remembered.
👉さあ、looks bigger than の後、than の後ろにフルセンテンスが来ています。
I remembered「私が覚えていたよりも」というわけですね。
▶︎この than の後ろにフルセンテンスが使えるようになると、随分比較級も
使いやすくなりますよ。

② I measured it, so it should be fine.
👉 measure「測る」という動詞ですね。しっかりと発音に注意してみてください。
▶︎そして、should be fine – この should は「〜であるはず」というわけですね。

③ Anyway, we don’t …..
👉 anyway それまでの文脈を断ち切る「とにかく」というフレーズですね。

④ we don’t have time to set it up, so…
👉そして、 we don’t have time「時間がない」これは、もうまとめて口にできる
表現でしょう。
▶︎そして time の後ろの、どういう時間かを説明する to 不定詞が並んでいます。
to set it up「それを設置する」というわけです。set up こちらも併せて
覚えておきましょう。

⑤ We’ll sort out the dresser when we get back.
👉さあ、sort out というフレーズ、これは「解決する」という意味で使われています。
▶︎そして when we get back – この会話の中で「私たちが戻ってくる」- これは
未来に起こるはずの出来事ですが、will も be going to も使われていませんよね。
これは、「私たちが戻る」それが話の前提になっているからですね、実際に
起こっているものとして、話しているのだから現在形が用いられています。

Practice

Today we’re focusing on these unusual words, which change their meaning
depending on whether they are used in a countable way or an uncountable way.
So look at lots of examples here. Here we go!
・We don’t have time to set it up.
・Time is money.
・Do you have time to talk?
・It took me a long time to get there.
・How many times have I told you that?
・Did you have a good time at the party?

・This is made of glass.
・These are champagne glasses.
・I always wear glasses.

▶︎ OK! Another set!
・Can you put more paper in the printer?
・This story is in all the papers.

▶︎ And our last few sentences with “work” and “works.”
・I did a lot of work today.
・Let’s get down to work.
・after work
・before work
・the complete works of Shakespeare
・This is one of Mozart’s earliest works.

▶︎ You guys did some great work.

Ending

▶︎ Hey, Chris. You say red wine should be served in a large glass, right?

Chris
▶︎ Yeah.

Onishi
▶︎ Why’s that?

Chris
▶︎ You know, in order to enjoy the full aroma and flavor of the red wine
it needs to be exposed to the air. So you need a large glass.
You never fill it close to the top.
