Roza
▶︎ Hey, everyone. This is Akino Roza. Ready for today’s lesson?

Chris
▶︎ Hi, guys. Chris McVay here. Ah, Roza, can I bother you for a second?

Roza
▶︎ Well, just for a second.

Chris
▶︎ It doesn’t matter. I’m just practicing.

Dialogue で

① Hi, Mom, can I bother you for a second?
👉さあ、ここで bother という動詞が出て来ましたね。ここでは
「面倒をかける」あるいは「邪魔をする」みたいな、そうした感触を持っています。
全体で「ちょっといいですか」とですね、相手に話を求める時に使ったりします。

② OK. Mom, you’ll never guess what I saw today while running. A raccoon!
👉さあ、ここで you’ll see never guess というですね、フレーズが
出て来ました。「あなたは決して見当をつけることができないでしょう」
– guess は「推測する」という動詞ですね。これはですね、面白い話を持ち込む
ときの決まり文句です。
👉そして I saw today while running
この while という接続詞「〜をしている間」というわけですが、
saw という出来事と running という出来事が同時に起こっている
– そうした同時性が感じられる接続詞です。

③ I heard that there have been more sightings recently.
👉さあ、sightings これは「目撃」というですね、
そうした名詞です。覚えておきましょう。

④ That’s good news the poor raccoon wasn’t hurt.
👉さあ、この文はおもしろい形をしていますね。
普通私たちの、一般的なですね、文法的な知識からでは、
It … that 〜. になるべき形ですね。
□ It’s good news that the poor raccoon wasn’t hurt.
でもここでは、that が使われていますよね。
Hey, Chris. What kind of impression do you get from this construction?
Chris
▶︎ Well, we have a strong impression. It’s expressed first followed
by clear explanation with nothing in the middle. The end result is
a very strong impact as a statement.

Practice

▶︎ OK, guys. It’s practice time.
Today we’re looking at the word “the.” This is one of the most common
word in English. And it’s nightmare for learners. Well, we’re hoping
you’ll be able to use it better if you focus on our image of “just the one.”
Keep that in your head, and you all do a lot better, I hope. OK.
Let’s get started.

OK. It’s very clear. That guy that the person was talking to.
It’s only one, right? So “the guy.” Once more.

Here again, there’s probably just one open door. So “the” is used here.

There you go! Little by little, you’re gonna get used to the use of “the.”
