👉11月からは、形容詞・副詞について勉強をします。

Lesson 143 big を気楽に、上手に

👉 big ▶︎比喩的な広がりをもつ「大きな」
※ large は、「単なるサイズの大きさを客観的に示す語」

Opening で

▶︎ Hi, guys. Chris McVay here. Hurry, hurry. Let’s get started.

Dialogue で

① Grandpa, I forgot to give you and Grandma my omiyage from Japan.
👉さあ、ここで forgot to – forget to というフレーズが出てきましたね。
「〜し忘れる」ということです。to は「これから」という意味をもつことがあって、
そして forget ⇨「これからすることを忘れる」つまり「〜し忘れる」という
わけですよね。「〜してない」ということです。

② Omi … what?
👉もちろん、相手の発言内容が分からなかった時には、Sorry. とか
Excuse me. とか I beg your pardon? などの聞き返し方があるわけですけれども、
ここでは、いいアイディアがありますよね。
▶︎相手の omiyage が分からない時には、それが不完全でもいいわけです。
omi … とちょっとまねしてあげるんですね。そして、what? と聞いてあげれば
「あっ、ここが分からなかった」とピンポイントで相手は理解することが
できて、omiyage が分からなかったんだな、ということを理解することが
できるわけです。

③ For health reasons.
👉さあ、この For health reasons. の for – これは、理由を表す for ですね。
こうした使い方、しっかりとマークしておいてください。

④ Well, you can share it with your friends.
👉さあ、ここで share it with your friends というフレーズが出てきましたね。
share は「共有する」まあ、そうしたですね、日本語と英語を対応させるだけで、
頭の中に入れておくとですね、with – 反射的には出てこないんですね。
share it with your friends – このような広い範囲で覚えておくと、すぐに
会話で使うことができますよ。

▶︎ It’s practice time. The main point we want to make today is
that “big” is not just a size. But it also has many uses when carrying emotion.
So let’s practice that.

▶︎ OK. Let’s go to some figurative uses. They’re short, but there’s a lot of them.

・big chance
・big shot
・big tea drinker
・big drinker
・big eater
・big spender
・big decision
・big issue
・big deal
・big moment
Phew, that was a lot.

▶︎ Phew, you’re out of breath, huh?
All of them focus on an emotion, right? And not talking about size.
So that’s the important thing to remember here.

▶︎ Yeah.

▶︎ OK. One last section.

・talk big
・think big
Well, I’m sure you all have big hearts, huh? Well done, today.

▶︎ Yeah, you did excellent! And that’s a big deal.

▶︎ Hey, guys. Why is “L” used for size of clothes?

▶︎ Oh, I thought it was “B.” Now only joking.
“Big” would be funny. “L” because “large,” “large” is the adjective for size.
So “L” equals “large.”

▶︎ But don’t worry, Sensei. No matter what your clothing size is,
we know you have a big heart.
