引き続き基本動詞のイメージをつかみ
「日本語を経由せず、英語を使う力」を養います。

Lesson 22 take のイメージは広がる

👉 take のイメージは「手に取る」- 目の前にあるものを意識的に・能動的に「取る」
※ Lesson 21から take を扱っています。

Opening で

Roza
▶︎ Hey, everyone. Akino Roza here.

Chris
▶︎ Chris McVay here. After such a lengthy introduction,
I feel a little weak. And I have a headache. Let’s go.

Roza
▶︎ Let me take your temperature. It’s normal.

Dialogue で

① Do you feel ill?
👉こうした文が簡単に作れると素晴らしいです。
この文は説明型オーバーラッピングの形です。
基本的には you ＝ ill で、you = ill に感じるというわけです。
「気分でも悪いのかい？」という文を構成するわけです。

② Seems to be normal.
👉ここの seem という動詞が出てきましたね。
これは、「見える」あるいは「〜のように思える」というわけですよね。
ここでは、normal「普通にように見える」というわけですよね。

③ That’s almost boiling!
👉さあ、boil – これは「沸騰する」という動詞ですね。
しっかりと覚えておきましょう。

④ Oh, we use Fahrenheit in England.
👉 Fahrenheit – これは温度の表示の仕方ですね。
これは「華氏」そして Celsius「摂氏」という意味です。
しっかりとですね、この２つ覚えておいて下さいね。
使う機会は度々あります。

⑤ Well, some British people use Celsius 〜
👉 some が出てきました。some のイメージは…
「いるのはわかる、あるのはわかるけれど、ぼんやりとハッキリとは見えない」
というわけです。つまり、ここではそうした British people がいる、そんな
感触で使われているわけです。

⑥ but I’m kind of old-fashioned.
👉この kind of は、「ちょっと」というフレーズです。
「ちょっと、old-fashioned 古風な」というわけです。

Practice

▶︎ OK, guys. It’s practice time again.
Now you just see such a wide variety of collocations with this
great verb “take.” So let’s look at some of them.
But keep in mind the basic image; it’s always stretching out
to get something.

Roza
▶︎ And remember! Don’t think in Japanese.

Chris
▶︎ Let’s begin.
・take your blood pressure
And you feel it going out, or going to get something, get some
information about your blood pressure. You take it.
・Also take your pulse

Roza
▶︎ The next example is “take a picture.”
・take a photo / take a video

Chris
▶︎ OK. And the next one is more straightforward.
・take my wallet
Someone stretching out and getting your wallet.
Oh! Stop! Stop! It’s my wallet.
But the word, the verb – “take” is perfectly here.
・take my wallet
Try that again. Excellent!

Roza
▶︎ And this last one is a little bit more abstract.
But the basic image applies here.
・take a break

▶︎ Hey, guys. Do you use “Celsius” or “Fahrenheit”?

Chris
▶︎ Well, I should use Fahrenheit being in Britain.
But nowadays I use Celsius. I have to say, my two brothers complain
if I say anything in Celsius. They don’t get it.
How about you, Roza?

Roza
▶︎ Well, the US use this Fahrenheit, of course.
But when I’m here, I only think in Celsius.
The best thing to do is just to think about in Celsius
this is the comfortable temperature, in Fahrenheit this
is the comfortable temperature.
So that’s kind of an easy way to think about it, I think.
