Master Business Words of Foreign Origin – challenge
◎ challenge「難題、異議を唱える」
👉日本語で「チャレンジする」は「挑戦する、頑張る」ですが
※英語の challenge は…
[1]「難しい課題」「試練」(名詞)
▶︎これまでの人生を振り返って “the biggest challenge of my life”
と言えば、「人生で一番大変だったこと」という意味
[2] 人や組織に対して「異議を唱える」(動詞)
[3] 「(コンテストや選挙などで)勝利を狙う」(動詞)
▶︎「その座を狙っている」という意味。「タイトル」が射程距離に
ある時に使われます。
〜のような使い方をします。
🔴日本語の「(新しいものに)チャレンジする」に
challenge を使うのは大げさです。👉その場合は、try で表現しましょう。

◎ジェニーさんは日本に来た当初、新しい生活の中で、challenge – つまり大変だったこと
は、どんなことですか。
Well, Japanese language was the huge problem for me then, and
continues to be a challenge for me even now many years later.
– I always encounter new challenges even after many years of study.
And sometimes I forget something I studied hard, and that can be
frustrating too.
