Opening で

Roza
▶︎ Hey, everyone. Akino Roza here.

Chris
▶︎ Well, listeners. Chris McVay here. I just wanted to say,

Dialogue で

① Yes, you’ve made great progress this year, Sally.
👉さあ、ここで made great progress というフレーズが出て来ましたね。
make progress – まとめて覚えておきましょう。

② Well, it’s all due to your great teaching.
👉due to というフレーズが出て来ましたね。
理由・原因を表すフレーズです。

③ Will mine be included?
👉さあ、ここでは主語が mine ですね。「私の絵」とう意味で、mine を使って
いるわけです。こうした所有代名詞、なかなか使えないものですよ。
しっかりと覚えといてくださいね。

Practice

▶︎ OK, guys. It’s practice time. Today we’re looking at “a.”
Now we all know very well “the” meaning the only one「これっきゃない」,
remember? So today we’re looking at “a,” which is one of several.
That’s the main point. So let’s look at some examples together.

Roza
▶︎ An important thing to keep in mind is to think only in English
when you practice.

Chris
▶︎ Here we go!
・I want to have an exhibition of the students’ works.
Here it’s clear, isn’t it? How many good hotels are there?
Only one? NO! So “a” is best here.

Roza
▶︎ Let’s continue.
Here too we have examples that show one of many. Ready?
・I’m a pianist.
・I’m a teacher.
・I’m a firefighter.
・Fido is a dog.
・That’s a good idea.
・I have an idea.

Chris
▶︎ You have many ideas, Roza, right?

Roza
▶︎ I do. And they’re all great.

Chris
▶︎ OK.
・I have a dog.
・I have one dog.

Roza
▶︎ I have a friend who is a real estate agent.

Chris
▶︎ And the last couple.
・She gave me a reason why she quit.
One of many reasons.
・She gave me the reason why she quit.
That’s the main reason, right?
