引き続き基本動詞のイメージをつかみ
「日本語を経由せず、英語を使う力」を養います。

Lesson ４7 感覚を表す動詞：listen

👉 listen は「耳を傾ける」- 意識的動作
※ Lesson 42 から「感覚を表す動詞」の学習に入っています。

Opening で

Let’s have a wonderful lesson. Let’s go!

Dialogue で

① He’s no “Cheetah” anymore.
👉ここの no 〜 anymore というコンビネーション。
通常 not 〜 anymore というコンビネーションでしたね。「もはや〜でない」
というわけですが、ここでは not よりも感情を色濃く出すことができる no
– 強い否定が使われていますよね。 no “Cheetah” anymore というわけです。

② What happened?
👉さあ、ここでは wh語が主語の位置に置かれた wh疑問文となっています。
▶︎主語をたずねる場合、主語の位置にポンと、wh語を置いてあげれば
いいだけですよね。

③ He needs to keep training to win races at school.
👉さあ、he needs to – need to のコンビネーションが出てきましたね。
「これから何かをすることが必要だ」というコンビネーションです。

④ I tell him he needs to exercise.
👉ここでは、I tell him – その tell him の内容 – それを後ろの節が説明する
リポート文の形ですね。
※さあ、ここで I tell と現在形が使われていることに注意してみてください。
現在形は習慣を表します。ここでは、「普段から彼に言っているんだ」という
ニュアンスで使っているわけです。

⑤ I think he’d listen to you.
👉さあ、ここで he’d という形が出てきました。he would です。
もちろん、これは he will としてもいいところですけれども、he will とすると
非常に自信のある言い方になってしまいますよね。「聞く – かもしれない」
というニュアンスを出すだめに he would となっているわけです。

Practice

Now today I want you to put one hand behind your ear, and lean
your head forward. Have you done that? I’m checking on. OK.
This will give you the feeling of listening, like “look.”
It’s an outward direction. You’re deliberately pushing outwards
to catch whatever noise, or whatever someone’s saying.
OK. So with that in mind, let’s try.
・Listen.
・Listen up.

▶︎ Here, too, you get that motion of the hand behind the ear,
listening close, right? So here we go.
・Shh! I’m listening for my soccer team’s result.
