Opening で

Roza
▶︎ Ah 〜, that was so awful. I’m crying, Chris.
Akino Roza here.

Chris
▶︎ Chris McVay here.  I don’t care, because I’m feeling a little homesick
with talk of scorns and things like that.

Dialogue で

How are things over there in England?
👉 How are things? – 典型的なあいさつの言葉出てきましたね。
・things ▶︎これは、状況全体をさしています。
・over there ▶︎これは距離感のある表現なんですね。
「そこでは」という話ですが、”over”  – これは上に「円弧」あるいは
「アーチ」を感じさせる前置詞なので、アーチ状のもの、つまり遠い距離が
感じられているというわけです。

② I love it here.
👉この it の使い方は難しいですね。
この it は「それ」という意味ではもちろんないわけです。
ここでは、そのイングランドの、その状況を全部受けながら、
I live it here. と言っているわけです。
この it の使い方、しっかり覚えましょう。

③ Are they home now?
👉 home という表現が出てきましたね。これは、here とか there の
仲間として使うことができるわけです。
▶︎これは、here「ここ」there「そこ」、そして home というのは
「家族が集う場所」- だから前置詞なしで、このように
Are they home? と使うことができるわけですね。

④ It’s natural to feel homesick.
👉 feel homesick「ホームシックになる」というフレーズです。

I guess so.
👉この so は、前の文脈全体を受けて、「私もそう思います – そう思います」
そういう感じで受けてみてください。

After the Dialogue

Chris
▶︎ Well, I’m sure our textbook will not make you feel homesick.
It will make you so happy.

Onishi
▶︎ I guess so.

Practice

Chris
▶︎ Today, let’s focus on a typical sentence structure with “make,”
“make” plus “object” plus “complement.”
Let’s practice together in order to catch the rhythm of all these “make”
phrases. Are you ready?

Roza
▶︎ And remember! “Don’t use Japanese!”

Chris
▶︎ Good point, Roza. Here we go!
・He made his dad big.
One more time.
・He made his dad big.

Roza
▶︎ Next, repeat after me!
・Make mine the fish burger. ×2

Chris
▶︎ And the next one. Are you ready?
・Make yourself at home.
Can you feel the rhythm, the flow? Once more.
・Make yourself at home.

Roza
▶︎ And here’s the last example.
・I made myself understood in English.
A bit long, but let’s try once more.
・I made myself understood in English.
Great!

Chris
▶︎ Well done, guys.

Ending

Chris
▶︎ What are you saying, Roza?

Words and Phrases

① object
👉目的語
② complement
👉補語
③ see to 〜
👉〜に必要な処置を施す / 〜の用意をする

これで、
Lesson 4 は終了!
