Review をします。
それでは第 40 週 ( 1月 Week 4 )の復習です。
※1月号の「タイトル」は、「限定詞・名詞関連・接続詞のイメージ」となっていますが、
今週は「接続詞」を扱っているので、接続詞のReview ①とします。

Lesson 196 主要接続詞①：流れの and
A and B ▶︎単なる「A＋B」ではない。そこには「因果関係の流れ」が感じられる
[Key] It started to rain, and we both got wet.
※雨が降り始めて、２人ともぬれてしまいました。
▶︎この文も「流れ」が感じられます。
「雨が降り始めた」と「２人ともぬれた」の間に、因果関係の流れが
ほのかに感じられているのです。

| ① andは、文だけでなく、名詞や形容詞、動詞句も繋げることが出来ます ※ John and Mary / you and me / a cup and saucer / bread and butter【名詞】 ※ He’s gentle and kind. 【形容詞】 ※ I sand and danced. 【動詞句】 – A … そして … B の流れを感じてください。 |
| ② and は時間的な流れも写し取る ※ I made a sandwich quickly and ate it. -「作って」から「食べた」ので、その逆はできません。 |

Lesson 197 主要接続詞②：選択の or
A or B▶︎「AかB」 or は選択を表す接続詞
[Key] You can pay in cash, or you can use a credit card.
※現金で払うこともできますし、クレジットカードを使うこともできます。
▶︎このキーセンテンスでは、文をつないでいますが、
名詞などさまざまな要素をつなぐことができます。
| ① or は文だけなく、「名詞」や「形容詞」、「動詞」などを自由につなげる ※【名 詞】Which color do you like, red or blue? ※【形容詞】I’m not sure if that was brave or stupid. ※【動 詞】Do you agree or disagree? |

| ② or は相手の理解を助けるための言い換えや、正確な数がわからない・興味がない時にも使える ※ Uluru, or Ayers Rock, is scared to Aboriginal people. [ 言い換え ] ※ 50 or 60 people attended the party. – [ 正確な数がわからない・興味がない時の表現 ] |

Lesson 198 主要接続詞③：流れを打ち消す but
but「しかし」▶︎先行する文脈と相反する内容を導く、「流れを打ち消す」接続詞
[Key] I like him, but I hate his sense of humor.
※私は彼が好きですが、彼のユーモアのセンスは大嫌いです。
▶︎この文も「好きです」という流れを but でポンと打ち消していますね。
| ① but は、形容詞や名詞、動詞句などもつなぐことができる。 ※【形容詞】 strict but kind ※【名 詞】not a doctor but a teacher ※【動詞句】He spoke Japanese but couldn’t read it, |
| ② but は「相手の発言の流れ」を打ち消す ※A: How about a bunch of roses for your girlfriend’s birthday? B: But we split up last week! |
| ③ 本題に移る前のクション 〜, but …. ※ Excuse me, but can you turn the music down, please? ※ Sorry, but can you turn the music down, please? |
| ④ Yes, but 〜で相手の意見を一度しっかり受け取ってから、自分の主張 ※ Yes, but have you taken into account the maintenance costs? ※ Yeah, but have you taken into account the maintenance costs? |
Lesson 199 主要接続詞④：because
because「〜なので」▶︎「理由・原因」を最も強力に・明確に表す接続詞
[Key] I didn’t face any long lines because I arrived at the immigration office early.
※私は出入国オフィスに早く着いたので、長い行列に出会うことはまったくありませんでした。
👉「理由・原因」を表したいなら、まずマスターすべきはこの接続詞
| ① because は通常２文をつなげる ※I broke up with her because she’s so self-centered. ▶︎❌ I broke up with her. Because she’s self-centered. ※ Why 〜? Because 〜. の受け答えは０回 Why do you love him? Because he’s so funny and kind. |
| ② 指定語句＋because で表現が広がる ※ I married him not because he’s rich, but because he’s kind. – not because 〜は「〜だからではない」 ※ Did you marry him just because he’s good-looking? – just (only) because 〜は「〜というだけで」 ※ mainly because 〜「主に〜という理由で」partly because「部分的には〜という理由で」 |
| ③「理由・原因」を名詞で説明したい時は because of ＋名詞 ※ This house is always messy because of you. |
| ④ That’s because 〜. は何かの「理由・原因」を述べるフレーズ ※ I gained weight. – That’s because you don’t exercise at all. [それは〜だから] |
