・ Week 47 は、発言のフローについて学習しました。

Lesson 236 焦点化のフロー①
➡️焦点化のひとつのパターンは「ほかのもの(すべて)」との比較
※そして何よりも、リラックスして楽しんでください。
▶︎ above all「とりわけ・何よりも重要なのは」
above は「高さが上」がイメージ。他のすべてのものより重要度が上、ということ。
| ① among other things / among others「中でも、とりわけ」 ※ Among other things, we need to talk about the budget. – among のイメージは「一群のモノ・人々」- ごちゃごちゃとしている感じ この表現は、「(中でも)その中から大切なものを取り出している」感触 |
| ② most of all は「何よりも・とりわけ」 ※ I like all kinds of fish, but most of all I love medaka. |
| ③ 最上級で焦点を際立たせる – best of all「最もいいのは・とりわけ」 ※ The resort we stayed at had a pool, several restaurants, and best of all, a private beach. – worst of all「何よりも良くないのは」least of all「最も〜でないのは」 |
Lesson 237 焦点化のフロー②
➡️ the のイメージは「ひとつ」に決まる
[Key] The problem is that we don’t have enough time.
※問題は、私たちに十分な時間がないことです。
▶︎この文では、the を用いた焦点化が行われています。
ここでは、「唯一の」「最も重要な」問題であることが示され、耳目を集めます。
◎「ひとつの問題は〜」という時は、One problem is 〜. となります。
| ① The trouble is 〜「問題は〜」The point is 〜「重要なのは〜」 ※ The trouble is that we have only a limited amount of time an money. ※ The point is not to be afraid of making mistakes. – to 不定詞を be動詞の後ろに使うこともできます。The thing is 〜 もあり |

| ② especially – 特に目立つ顕著なものをひとつ取り出す時 ※ It’s a bad idea, especially when you consider the cost. – specially は「特定の目的(のためにわざわざ)」が意識されています。 |

| ③ particularly, in particular「特に・とりわけ」 ※ This manga is particularly popular among young people. – particle は「粒」多くの粒から際立った「粒」を取り上げるニュアンス |

その他：talking of 〜, by the way, anyway, in any case
[Key] Speaking of games, how about going to be a retro game cafe later?
※ゲームと言えば、あとでレトロゲームを置いている喫茶店に行くのはどうでしょうか？
▶︎ speaking of 〜「〜と言えば」は、
場面に出てきた話題をつかて上手に話題を転換するフレーズ。
| ① talking of 〜は、speaking of 〜と同様に使われるフレーズ ※ Talking of food, have you tried the new Indian restaurant across the street? |
| ② by the way「ところで」 ※ By the way, Chris, are you free tomorrow night? We’re having a party. – by は「そば」the way は「それまでの話の流れ」 それまでの流れから、そばの脇道に入り込む意識で使われる |
| ③ anyway「とにかく・ともあれ」 ※ Anyway, the meeting starts at 3 p.m. ※ Anyway, that’s all for today. – 話題転換の重要語。それまでの話題を黒板消しで文字を全部消すように精算 |
| ④ in any case「どのみち・とにかく」 ※ In any case, we’ll have fun. – case は「場合・ケース」in any case は「どんな場合でも」終止符を打つ |

その他：at the end of 〜, in short / in a word / to put it briefly
/ in a nutshell, on the whole / all in all
[Key] The bottom line is that he wanted to get more customers.
※要するに、彼はお客をもっと増やしたかったのです。
👉 bottom line は「計算書の最終行」そこから、The bottom line is 〜は、
「要するに・結局のところ」と、まとめとして使われるフレーズ。
【会話では】Bottom line, he wanted to get more customers. とも言える。
| ① at the end of the day「最終的な結論」-「1日の終わり」に例えている ※ At the end of the day, we have no choice, right? |
| ②いろんな「手短に・一言で・簡潔に述べると」 ※ In short, the future is looking very bright for our company. ※ In a word, the future is looking very bright for our company. ※ To put it briefly, the future is looking very bright for our company. ※ In a nutshell, the future is looking very bright for our company. – nutshell は「木の実の殻」コンパクトさの比喩 |
| ③ on the whole, all in all「全体として・おおむね」 ※ On the whole, I’m happy with this year’s lessons. ※ All in all, I’m happy with this year’s lessons. |
