会話の場面

登場人物

・大学生のヘレン (Helen)とギャリー (Gary)

状況

・二人が大学のカフェテリアで昼食をとっていて、「専攻」についての話をしています。

Opening で

Roza
▶︎ Hey, everyone. This is Akino Roza.

David
▶︎ And I’m David Evans. Let’s be nice to our elders. OK?
Here we go!

Dialogue で

① Helen, I’m thinking of changing my major.【think of のニュアンス】
👉さあ、major という単語が出てきましたね。この単語は、「大学の選考科目」
という意味です。
👉そして、think of というフレーズが出てきましたね。
What’s the nuance of this phrase “think of”?
Roza
▶︎ Well, imagine like a talk bubble that you see in comics, right?
I’m thinking of, considering umm if I do this, then something like this
will happen, and it’s a kind of this like “fuzzy cloud.”

② What would you switch your major to?【would の感触】
👉さあ、ここの would -「もし変えるとしたら」という仮定的な条件が
埋め込められている感触の would ですよね。この使い方、しっかり
覚えておきましょう。
👉そして、switch という動詞が出てきました。
これは「取りかえる」「交換する」という意味で使われています。

③ I was thinking of economics.【ここでも think of】
👉 thinking of economics – ここでは頭の中に吹き出しがやっぱり出てきているん
ですね。その中に economics があって「もやー」と考えていました、という
わけです。

④ Why don’t you talk to an academic counselor?
【academic counselor とは？】
👉さあ、ここでは academic counselor というフレーズが出てきました。
もう日本語でも「アカデミック・カウンセラー」なんですけれども、
大学で学業全般に渡るアドバイスをしてくれる教官のことを指しています。

Practice

David
▶︎ All right, everyone. It’s practice time. How are you feeling?

Roza
▶︎ I think it would be a good idea to get started. All right?

David
▶︎ All right. Let’s think of the feeling for today.
We have two parts. First is the core, “a command.”
For example, “bring a gift, ” “start your own business,” speak to her directly.”
But then we need to make it softer, make it advise or suggestion.
So we add things like “It would be a good idea to 〜.” or “It’s just an idea, but
why don’t you 〜?”
Let’s get familiar with this today. So here’s our first.
・It would be a good idea to bring a gift.
・It might be a good idea to bring a gift.

Roza
▶︎ Let’s continue.
・It’s just an idea, but why don’t you start your own business?
And here specially the use of “just” makes it even lighter.
So let’s keep that in mind. Let’s try one more time.
・It’s just an idea, but why don’t you start your own business?

▶︎ Really good work. Here’re a few more using “best.”
・The best thing is to speak to her directly.
・Your best bet is to speak to her directly.

▶︎ Now these last two examples are a little bit stronger than the ones
we’ve practiced so far. So let’s go through them.
・I’d advise you to smoke less.
・It may be in your best interest to retire now.
