Opening で

Roza
▶︎ Hey, everyone. This is Akino Roza.
Chris, you’re snoring too?

Chris
▶︎ No, no! I never snore. Never, ever, ever. Anyway,
Chris McVay here. Let’s have an exciting lesson with no snoring.

Dialogue で

① I can’t believe …
👉さあ、ここでは I can’t believe「信じられない」というフレーズが出て
きましたね。I can’t believe – これだけなら、言える人は少なくはないでしょう。
デモ「何を信じられなかったのか」を続けることができるかどうかは、別問題ですね。
しっかりとリポート文の形 – I can’t believe と言ってから、その内容を後ろの節で
説明する – この形を作って説明してあげてください。

② ( I can’t believe ) you slept through the most important scene!
👉 そして、slept through というフレーズが出てきましたね。sleep through 〜
これは「〜の間ずっと眠ったままでいる」というフレーズ。through はトンネル状の
ものを抜けていく、そうしたイメージを持ちますよね。ですから、sleep through は
そうした意味になるわけです。

③ We’ve been sitting in the theater for two hours.
👉さあ、we’ve been sitting とありましたね。
have been ing の現在完了進行形です。「今に至るまでずっと何かをし続けている」
それがこの形のニュアンスでしたね。

④ All right, we can talk while we walk.
👉この while という単語「〜している間に」と訳されますけれども、
２つの出来事が同時に起こっている様子を想像してみてください。
talk という出来事、そして walk という出来事 – この２つが同時に起こっている
様子を述べています。

Practice

▶︎ Hey, are you ready to practice?
Today we’ve got two words. The first is “too” “t, double o.” And the second
is “rather.” “Too” is “OTT,” that means Over The Top or exaggerated.
And “rather” always includes a notion of comparison.
So let’s have a go at practicing these two.

Roza
▶︎ That’s right, guys. And remember! When you practice, think in English
rather than Japanese.

Chris
▶︎ Let’s start.
・I was too tired to sleep.
Once more.
・I was too tired to sleep.

Roza
▶︎ Continuing on.
・This soup is rather tasteless.
One more time.
・This soup is rather tasteless.

Chris
▶︎ OK. Now another “rather.”
・I’d rather take a walk somewhere.
You can feel the comparison, right? “Take a walk” rather than “do something
else.” So we’re comparing here.
So with than in mind, let’s try one more.
・I’d rather take a walk somewhere.

▶︎ And the last one.
・The problem is not a lack of intelligence but rather a lack of motivation. ×２

▶︎ I’m sure there’s no lack of motivation in our listeners, right?
