4月のテーマは基本動詞①

👉今年度は…
会話で頻用される表現のイメージをつかみ、
「日本語を経由せず、英語を使う」力を養います。
・基本動詞
・前置詞
・形容詞
などへとゆっくり進めていきます。

◎基本動詞とは
▶︎日常頻繁に使われる動詞のこと
– こうした動詞は極端に単純な意味を持つため、無数の状況と日本語訳に
対応します。
そのため基本動詞の学習は、

シンプルなイメージ(中核となる意味・ニュアンス)をつかみ、それがどういった
状況に使われるのかをつぶさに理解し頭に入れることが必要

👉 make のイメージは「力を加えて作りあげる」

▶︎ Chris McVay here. Roza, why are you smiling from ear to ear?
For a moment? Is it because you’re with us? Or is it something
to do with Professor Peacock?

Dialogue で

① By the way, 〜.
👉「ところで」というフレーズ。
これがどうして「ところで」となるのかというと、
by は「近い」を表す前置詞でしたよね。
話のメインのway(道) から、ちょっと離れた別の話題に移る時に使うからです。

② She was smiling from ear to ear.
👉 smile from ear to ear「耳から耳まで」こう- 口が広がっているわけです。
口裂け女ではありません。これは、「満面の笑みを浮かべる」というフレーズです。

③ Why a Mexican bracelet?
👉この Why a Mexican bracelet? – これは、もちろん完全な文ではありません。
完全な文にしようと思えば…
Why did she make a Mexican bracelet? となるわけですけれども、
もう文脈上、それは明らかですから、そこを飛ばして省略してるわけです。
▶︎くどくど同じ話を繰り返さない – そこに会話の軽快さが宿ってきます。
こうした省略の仕方を頭に入れるようにしましょう。

④ Because we first met in Mexico in the 1980s.
👉 in the 1980s この「1980年代に」という言い方。
しっかりと覚えましょう。

⑤ but it looks like she‘s still very fond of you.
👉 be fond of 〜「〜が好き」というフレーズ

▶︎ Today, we want to concentrate on collocations – いい組み合わせ –
because “make” has a wide variety of collocations.
For example, make a speech.
Why not “do a speech”?
Why is “make a speech” perfect?
Because of the basic image of shaping it, it needs lots of preparation
and training until you’ve got the final beautiful successful product.
So keep that in mind while we practice these phrases, right?

But it takes a lot of preparation and training to make a good teacher, right?
Therefore “make” is the perfect collocation.
