Opening で

▶︎ Hey, everyone. Akino Roza here. Ready for today’s lesson?

Chris
▶︎ Hi, guys. Chris McVay here. Oh, no! I’m coming down with something.
We’d better get started quickly

Dialogue で

① Casper, did you catch a cold?
👉 catch a cold これは「風邪をひく」というフレーズですね。
しっかりと覚えておきましょう。

② Ah, I think I’m coming down with something.
👉さあ、この come down with 〜これは「病気などのかかる」
という表現ですね。

③ By the way, Alexis, I was thinking we should make some changes this year.
👉さあ、ここの by the way「ところで」と話題を変える時に使います。
by は「そば」というわけです。「そばの脇道に入る」そうした感触を持った
フレーズです。

④ What do you mean?
👉さあ、この What do you mean? 文全体をしっかりと覚えといてくださいね。
相手の真意をただす – そうした便利な表現です。

⑤ Those plastic boxes are pretty shabby.
👉さあ、ここで shabby という単語が出てきましたね。
「みすぼらしい」という訳が当てられますが、お二人にちょっと聞いてみましょう。
▶︎ So what’s the image of “shabby”?
【R】For me, it’s kind of like “ガタガタしている.”
【C】For me, it’s like, you know, it used to be good, but now it looks really
old and used.

▶︎ OK, guys. It’s practice time again.
Today we’re focusing on some difficult words that many learners often
think are countable, but in fact they are usually uncountable.
Let’s look at some of these words. Here we go!
・Money talks.
・Money isn’t everything.
・I don’t have much money.

Roza
▶︎ Continuing on.
・Fruit is a great source of vitamins.
・There’s a lot of food on the table.
・I spend a lot of money on food.

Chris
▶︎ Here’s one which many learners get wrong and say, “advices.”
So let’s get used to this way.
・I’d like to give you some advice.
・Information is the key to success.
And one more.
・There’s too much information.

▶︎ Let me give you a piece of advice.
So in this case, “a piece” is the counter for the advice.
・Let me give you a piece of advice.
