Lesson ４8 感覚を表す動詞：hear

👉 hear は「聞こえる」-「向こうからやってくる感触」
※ Lesson 42 から「感覚を表す動詞」の学習に入っています。

Opening で

Roza
▶︎ Hey, everyone. Akino Roza here. Hey, Chris!

Chris
▶︎ What?

Roza
▶︎ Did you hear about Onishi Sensei?

Chris
▶︎ No. What happened?

Roza
▶︎ I don’t know. Let’s find out,

▶︎ Chris McVay here. But I do know that I feel totally engaged
to this program.

Dialogue で

① He’s engaged.
👉さあ、engaged というのは、もちろん、動詞 engage の過去分詞ですね。
そして、この engage という動詞は、基本的に「接触する」ということ
なんですね。接触して、ガッチリ噛み合う – まあそうしたですね、２つの歯車が
噛み合うような – そうしたイメージをもっているわけです。
▶︎お二人の歯車がですね、ガッツリと噛み合って婚約というわけですね。

② He went on a few dates with a girl named Ayaka.
👉さあ、go on a date – ここでは went 「過去形」が出てきましたね。
このフレーズは、「デートをする」というフレーズ。しっかりと
覚えておきましょう。

③ I thought he broke up with her a long time ago.
👉さあ、ここでは break up with – 過去形で broke up with という
フレーズが出てきましたね。「誰だれと別れる」というフレーズです。

④ Well, they got back together again.
👉 get back together というわけですね。
「もとさやに戻る」「ヨリをもどす」そうしたイメージで
使えるフレーズです。

⑤ I guess so.
👉さあ、I guess so. この so は、基本的に前の文脈全体を受けてる
わけですね。「彼らがヨリを戻した」→私もそう思う、というわけ
ですね。この so の使い方、上手になってくださいね。

⑥ Well, I’m happy for him.
👉そして最後の I’m happy for him.
「彼のためには良かった」この言い方もですね、もう英作文することは
おそらくできません。まとめて、覚えるようにしてみてください。

Practice

▶︎ OK. It’s practice time. I’m sure you remember the pair “look” and “see.”
“Look”‘s motion was outwards, and “see” was inwards.
I’m looking, and looking and.. Ah, now I see it.
Well, it’s the same with this pair “listen” and “hear.”
“Listen” is outwards, and I’m listening, and listening, and then
inwards with “hear.”
So it’s the same feeling, right? Should we try that then?

▶︎ And remember. Only think in English!

Chris
▶︎ So let’s practice these sentences.
・Did you hear that noise?
So you’re listening, listening, then “Bomb!” inwards, it comes, and
you catch it.
・Did you hear that noise?
Very good. One more.
・Did you hear the news?

▶︎ Next example.
・I’ve never heard of anyone by the name.
One last time.
・I’ve never heard of anyone by the name.

▶︎ OK. And the next one.
・I heard him play the piano.
So the noise of the piano comes inwards into your brain, and
you hear it. So after me.
・I heard him play the piano.
Last time.
・I heard him play the piano.

・Did you hear that Ken had an accident?
So here you imagine the information of “Ken had an accident” coming in.
・Did you hear that Ken had an accident?
