引き続き基本動詞のイメージをつかみ
「日本語を経由せず、英語を使う力」を養います。

Lesson 33 be動詞

👉be動詞は実質的な意味をもたない単なる「つなぎ(＝)」

Opening で

Roza
▶︎ Hey, everyone. Akino Roza here.

Chris
▶︎ Chris McVay here. Now, now, no more tears.
Let’s relax and enjoy doing today’s lesson.

Dialogue で

① That’s completely understandable.
👉 completely これは「完全に」
👉 understandable もちろん -able がついていますので、
「理解可能な」という形容詞。まあ、ちょっと長い単語ですが、
完全に日常語ですよね。

② After so many years with us, 〜
👉うまい言い方ですね。
「私たちと共に長年過ごしてその後」というわけですよね。
この with が使えるかどうか、ということですね。
しっかりと練習を重ねましょう。

③ Yes, it‘s a very emotional moment.
👉 it’s 周りの状況ですね – それをぼんやりと指しながら、
「とてもエモーショナルなモーメントです」と言っているわけですね。
▶︎ emotional moment これは「感情的な瞬間」というわけでしょう。

④ And you’ll be sorely missed, 〜
👉ここでは sorely というですね、非常に珍しい副詞が出てきましたね。
これは miss「いなくて寂しく思う」という動詞と非常に強い
コンビネーションをつくる副詞です。「非常に・とても」というわけですね。

⑤ 〜 that’s for sure.
👉 for sure – これは「確かで、明らかで、確実で」というわけですね。

Practice

▶︎ OK, guys. Let’s practice.
Now today it’s the verb to “be.”
You know, the verb to “be” has no real meaning.
It’s just a connector between the subject and the explanatory compliment.
So let’s get started.

Roza
▶︎ And remember. Don’t think in Japanese.

Chris
▶︎ So after me,
・We’re happy.
“We” equals “happy.” And in the middle we’ve got this weakly pronounced
connector. So we’ve got “We’re happy.”
Once more.
・We’re happy.

Roza
▶︎ Next example.
・He was sad.
Same thing here except in past tense.
・He was sad.

Chris
▶︎ OK.
・Chris is in the garage. ×３
So be careful with the weak pronunciation.
Once more.
・Chris is in the garage.
And exactly the same for the last two.
・The party will be on Saturday.
・I’ll be there by ten.
