会話の場面

登場人物

・アキ(Aki)

状況

・プロポーズが成功して、いよいよ結婚する二人。さて結婚式はどこで行うので
しょう？

Opening で

David
▶︎ Sensei, do you believe in cryptids?

David
▶︎ あ〜、真偽がわからない生物みたいなやつでしょう。

David
▶︎ Yeah, those.

Roza
▶︎ Hey, everyone. Akino Roza here. Let’s get started.

David
▶︎ And I’m David Evans. Let’s have a good time today.

Dialogue で

① Ah, you keep looking at your ring. 【keep と ing形】
👉さあ、ここでは keep ＋動詞 ing形の形が出てきましたね。
「〜し続ける」という意味です。覚えといてください。

② It’s such a lovely engagement ring.【engagement のニュアンス】
👉さあ、ここでは engagement ring というフレーズが出てきましたね。
もちろん「婚約指輪」ということなんですけれども、　なぜ engagement ring は
engagement ring って言われるのですかね。ちょっと聞いてみましょう。
David
▶︎ So “engagement” has this image of two gears, right? The teeth of gears
are combining, joining together. So when two sides come together and
interlock, that’s the sense of engagement.

③ Where should we hold our wedding?【hold の意味】
👉 hold a wedding – hold という単語は「保つ」と訳されることが多いわけ
ですけれども、meeting あるいは wedding – それを開催する、開くという
使い方もあります。

Practice

David
▶︎ OK, everyone. I think we should do some practice now.
Hey, Roza. Don’t you think we should do that?

Roza
▶︎ Well, I think we need to do some practice actually.

David
▶︎ Oh, wow! All right. Let’s get to it.
・We should hire a photographer.
One more.
・We need to get dressed up.

Roza
▶︎ OK. Let’s continue with suggestions using “should.”
・I think we should get separate rooms.
・I think we should follow the manual.
・Don’t you think we should do that?
Excellent!

▶︎ Let’s continue with “suggestion.”
・I suggest a guided tour.
・I suggest meeting in a hotel lobby.
・I suggest we cut back on spending.
