前置詞の学習です。

👉how に対応する使い方の by「どうやって・どのくらい〜する」
▶︎行為を行う際「方法」は、手近に感じられるため by が使われる

Opening で

Roza
▶︎ Hey, everyone. Akino Roza here. Are you excited for today’s lesson?

Chris
▶︎ Hi, guys. Chris McVay here. Of course, Roza, we get excited
every time we talk about or play table tennis. Let’s do it again.

Dialogue で

① The one by Peacock?
👉さあ、ここでは the one by Peacock という表現が出てきましたね。
この one は、book を繰り返さないために使われています。
しっかりとこういう端折った言い方をマスターしてみてください。

② I read that a long time ago.
👉 a long time ago これは１つのかたまりとして覚えておきましょう。
「随分前に」というわけですね。
▶︎ I read that という文の後ろについているために、その文の出来事が、
いつ起こったのか説明 – 「説明は後ろに置く」のルールに従って、
一番最後に置かれているわけです。

③ You’re right, but you can’t judge a book by its cover.
👉さあ、ここでは You’re right, but … で文を始めていますよね。
非常に重要な配慮の１つです。自分の意に沿わないことを相手が言ったからと
いって、すぐに自分の意見をポンとぶつけるのは、あまり会話では好ましく
ないわけです。
▶︎ Yes, but … あるいは You’re right, but … と言ってですね、
しっかりと相手の言い分を一旦引き取ってから、自分の意見を展開する
– このリズムをですね、しっかり学んでいただきたいと思います。

④ How did you get interested in Peacock in the first place?
👉さあ、ここで get interested というフレーズが出てきましたね。
get は「動き」を表す動詞です。そこから「変化」-「興味を持つようになる」
という意味で使われているわけです。
👉そして in the first place これは「そもそも」という表現ですね。

that the basic image of “by” is “closeness.”
And this naturally leads to the meaning of “how,” the way something
is done, or the degree.
So let’s practice many examples expressing this.

How did you go there? By car. By train. By bus. There you have it.
