▶︎ Really?

▶︎ Yeah, but nobody offered me any iced tea

Dialogue で
① Let’s just say it’s been a long time.
👉よく使われるフレーズが出てきました。これはどんなニュアンスなんでしょうか。
お二人に聞いてみましょう。
▶︎ What kind of nuance does “let’s just say” have?
Chris
▶︎ We use “let’s just say” when you don’t have to talk about the details
of something.
Roza
▶︎ For example, oh, I’ll ask Chris, “How old are you?”
Chris
▶︎ Let’s just say I am a little bit older than you.
So I don’t have to admit my real age.
It’s a delicate subject, so then we say “let’s just say.”
※「ということにしておきましょう」日本語でも同じニュアンスですよね。
それ以上踏み込みたくない時に使う”ボヤッ”としたままにしておくための表現
だということです。

▶︎ Do you really use this type of phrase in daily conversation?

▶︎ Maybe not daily. Often it’s used in a boasting way.
Chris
▶︎ Yeah, I agree. Often it’s ….”Look at me! I read four books in a day!”
Grammar In Action
◎ His latest spy novel is as gripping as any novel I’ve read.
Onishi
▶︎ Hey, Chris. This adjective “gripping” is often used for stories?
Chris
▶︎ Yeah, I like it actually. Stories and movies.
When basically you can’t stop watching or you can’t stop reading,
it holds your attention so much – GRIP!
Roza?
Roza
▶︎ And continue on what Chris said, ah, it’s often used to describe books.
Like this book is a gripping thriller, or this movie is a gripping adventure.
Onishi
▶︎ So in the same nuance as “page turner” or something?
Roza
▶︎ Yeah, yeah.
