Opening で
Roza
▶︎ Akino Roza です。Chris, it’s your turn!
Chris
▶︎ I know, Roza. Why are you saying that?
Chris McVay here, everybody. Let’s get started.
Dialogue で
① I want to take you on a tour of Ogikubo today.
ここでは take you on a tour of Ogikubo today となっていましたね。
② It’s my first time here.
It’s my first time.
③ First, I want to show you a historical landmark to the left there.
👉さあ、ここでは show you a historical landmark とありましたよね。
What’s the difference between these two?
▶︎ OK. I think you remember we talked about the difference between “classic”
and “classical.” And this is similar. “Historic” means something really important
or momentous that happened in history. Whereas “historical” is talking about
a period of time, history.
After the Dialogue
Roza
▶︎ You know, I want to thank you guys on a tour of our textbook today.
Unfortunately, we don’t have enough time. So please check it out
for yourself.
Practice
.Chris
▶︎ Hey, are you ready to practice? Yes, let’s get started.
This time we’re looking at “to” expressing a connection with a variety
of emotions. And also expressing the extent of something.
So with that in mind, let’s practice together.
・to my disappointment
・to my disgust
・to my delight
・to my relief
And one more.
・to my satisfaction
All kinds of emotions, as you can see.
Roza
▶︎ And in the next few examples, we’re talking about “extent.”
The point up to which something holds.
So keep that in mind here.
・to a certain extent
・to the best of my knowledge
・to my heart’s content
Chris
▶︎ And the last few examples.
Actually, point to the end point, point to the end itself.
For example, …
・It’s a quarter to seven.
・ten days to Christmas
And our last one.
・30 kilometers to Tokyo
OK. How did you do, guys? Like things you did brilliantly.
Roza
▶︎ Fantastic work, guys.
Ending
Onishi
▶︎ Hey, guys. Could you explain the nuance of “certain” in
“to a certain extent”?
Roza
▶︎ Sure. Well, for example, in No.2 “I agree with you to a certain extent.”
There is “a certain extent.” I know how much I agree with you.
And I agree with you up to the point.
But that amount is not certain to the listeners.
Chris
▶︎ I think it’s helpful, Roza. Re-compare with “some.”
You know, we often say “to some extent.” That’s very blurry.
(?) “ぼんやり” kind of meaning.
Words and Phrases
① momentous
② blurry
Lesson 131
