Opening で

Chris
▶︎ Chris McVay here. I think we’d better start as soon as possible.

Roza
▶︎ Hey, everyone. Akino Roza here. I’ve gotten used to not
understanding Onishi Sensei’s openings.

Dialogue で

① She’ll be back in three weeks.
👉さあ、この in の使い方「３週間後に」という使い方ですね。
後のレッスンで触れるところがある使い方です。

② I wonder if she’s having a good time in Japan.
👉さあ、ここで I wonder if というフレーズが出てきました。
wonder という動詞は頭に？を浮かべている – そうした意味を持っているんですね。
「私はわからない」そして if は「〜かどうか」ですから、
訳が「〜だろうかと思う」となるわけですけれども、頭に？を浮かべている様子 –
それを想像しながら音読練習を重ねてみて下さい。

③ I’m sure she’s catching up with her mom and dad.
👉さあ、この文はリポート文の形ですね。
I’m sure の説明が、she から始まる後ろに置いた節ということになります。
👉ここで、catch up with というフレーズが出てきました。
これは「近況を話し合う」というフレーズ。

So we’re continuing with the preposition “in.”
“In” does not only refer to an easy – to – imagine physical container.
It’s also used for a most figurative type of container where you feel
surrounded by something.
So with that in mind, let’s practice together.
