今回は前回の続きで、「第３問Ａの２」の問題を詳しくみていきましょう。
なお、第３問の配点は全部で３３点です。
Ａ問２：パラグラフにそぐわない英文を見つける問題
次の問い（問１～３）のパラグラフ（段落）には、まとまりをよくするために取り除いた方がよい文が一つある。取り除く文として最も適当なものを、それぞれ下線部①～④のうちから、一つずつ選べ。

In one study, scientists took 53 birds from urban and rural areas of Barbados, one of the Caribbean islands, conducted a variety of tests, released them back into their natural surroundings, and reported their findings. ① The birds from urban areas were better at problem-solving tasks than the ones from rural environments. ② The researchers prepared several experiments to check the differences between the groups of birds. ③ The urban birds had more capacity to resist disease than the rural ones. ④ The researchers had expected that in comparison to the rural birds, the urban birds would be smarter but weaker. →一番最初の英文、赤い下線の部分を読むと、
「都市部」の生活、「田舎」での生活にはそれぞれの技術が必要がだとあり、
その後からは、「鳥」がトピックの中心となります。
ここからすると
「都市部と田舎の鳥の特徴」のようなものになると思われます。
【選択肢の英文の内容】
・それぞれの選択肢の英文の内容を確認しましょう。
①The birds from urban areas were better at problem-solving tasks than the ones from rural environments.
→ 「都市部の鳥」の方が、better at problem-solving tasks「問題解決能力がより高い」 と言ってます。
② The researchers prepared several experiments to check the differences between the groups of birds.
→ check the differences between the groups of birds から、「２つのグループの鳥の間の違いをチェックする」ための実験を用意したと言っています。
③ The urban birds had more capacity to resist disease than the rural ones.
→ 「都会」の鳥の方が、more capacity to resist disease – 病気に対する抵抗力が強い、と言っています。
④ The researchers had expected that in comparison to the rural birds, the urban birds would be smarter but weaker.
→研究者の予測は、the urban birds would be smarter but weaker- 「都市部の鳥の方が賢いが体は弱いだろう」というものであったらしい。
※この４つの内容と「トピック」を比べてみましょう。
「トピック」・・・「都市部の鳥と田舎の鳥の特徴」
選択肢①「都市部は問題解決能力が高い」
選択肢②「両方のグループの鳥の違いをチェックする実験を用意」
選択肢③「都市部の方が病気の抵抗力がある」
選択肢④「研究者は、都市部の方は賢いが体は弱いと予測した」
→この問題に関しては、選択肢①から④を読んでいくと、明らかに順番がおかしいものが１つあります。それは②です。
▶︎②で「違いをチェックする実験を用意した」で、①、③、④では「その違い」を述べています。この時点で、文の流れがおかしいので、②という解答を出してもいいと思います。（普通であれば、②→①→③→④となるでしょう。）
👉②の「両方のグループの検査をした」というような内容は、①の前の部分でも示されているので、わざわざこの場所で同じような内容を繰り返す必要もない、というのも「取り除く」理由になります。
【パラグラフと選択肢の逐語訳】
a. 都会や田舎で暮らすことには、それぞれに違う技術が必要である。
b. このことは人間はもちろんのこと、もちろん鳥にも当てはまる。
