4月のテーマは基本動詞①

👉今年度は…
会話で頻用される表現のイメージをつかみ、
「日本語を経由せず、英語を使う」力を養います。
・基本動詞
・前置詞
・形容詞
などへとゆっくり進めていきます。

◎基本動詞とは
▶︎日常頻繁に使われる動詞のこと
– こうした動詞は極端に単純な意味を持つため、無数の状況と日本語訳に
対応します。
そのため基本動詞の学習は、

シンプルなイメージ(中核となる意味・ニュアンス)をつかみ、それがどういった
状況に使われるのかをつぶさに理解し頭に入れることが必要

👉 make のイメージは「力を加えて作りあげる」
※今回も Lesson 4 と同じく make の目的語説明型の文を扱っています。

Opening で

Roza
▶︎ To be honest, I don’t believe in that kind of stuff.
Hey, everyone. Akino Roza here. Ready for today’s lesson?

Chris
▶︎ Chris McVay here. And I hate to say this, but I have the same
opinion as Roza. Very, very rare. Anyway, let’s go with it!

Dialogue で

① I’ll tell you what.
👉 So could you explain the nuance of “I’ll tell you what” in this situation?
Roza
▶︎ Sure, well you use “I’ll tell you what” when you, right before you
introduce a good offer to the other person.

Chris
▶︎ That’s right. And you know the person’s reluctant.
That is, you know, he doesn’t really want to do it like here –
“I don’t believe in this kind of stuff.”
So you’re opening up, giving, offering something that will make him
actually try.

② Just put out your right hand.
👉 put out – これは「出す」と言うフレーズです。
しっかりと覚えておきましょう。

③ How do you know?
👉こうした how の使い方、しっかり慣れましょう。
how は、やり方・方法、あるいは様子・程度 – 様々なことを
聞くことができる wh語です。

④ So, it’s over?
👉この over は「終わり」という意味で使われています。
▶︎でも over の基本的なイメージは「上に円弧」すなわち「アーチ」
なんです。何かの物体の上にアーチがかかったような、そうした位置関係
を表しているわけです。何か出来事があって、そのアーチの左端から右端まで
ずっと登って行って、また落ちてくるわけです。
– 上を乗り超えてしまって、もうその物体から離れていますよね。
そのブッタを乗り越えてしまった後 – だから「終わりだ」というニュアンスが
生まれてくるわけです。

Now we really insist on the basic image because every use of “make
comes from the same basic image.
Now if we look at today’s phrases, they’re really all about pushing,
pressuring someone to do something, it can be positive or negative.
But this image of the clay and hands, do you remember?
