▶︎「発言タイプ」ー【判断を表現する】を勉強します。
私たちが日々行なっている、可能性や重要性、難易、優先などの判断を精度高く
表現することが目標です。

▶︎今回は「可能性がある」レベルの表現を学びましょう。
会話の場面
登場人物
・手相占い師のヒロコ (Hiroko)
・営業担当のリンタロウ (Rintaro)
状況
・営業担当になったばかりのリンタロウが、自分の営業成績についてヒロコに占ってもらう
ようです。
Opening で
Roza
▶︎ Hey, everyone. This is Akino Roza.
David
▶︎ And I’m David Evans. OK, everyone. Let’s get started.
Dialogue で
① Work-related readings are my specialty.【 specialty の意味 】
👉さあ、specialty – これは、「専門・得意とすること」という意味です。
② It really isn’t. 【 語順が意味を決定する 】
👉さあ、ここでは really と isn’t – この語順に注意してくださいね。
really が前に来ます。「それは、本当に isn’t amazing ではありません」と言っている
わけですね。「全然大したことではありません」という意味は、この順序から
生じているんで
③ I’ve tried to paint like him, but it’s not so easy. 【 強い表現を否定した場合の意味 】
👉 not so easy – not と「強い」表現 so easy のコンビネーションです。
「それほど簡単ではない」といった意味をもっています。
④ Do you think it’s possible that I’ll meet my sales goals? 【 meet のニュアンス 】
👉さあ、ここでは meet「達成する」という意味合いで使われていますが、
「〜しなければならないこと」そして「自分がやっていること」それが、ちゃんと出会う、
というわけです。だから、「達成する・充足する」という意味合いになります。
Practice

▶︎ All right. Let’s jump into today’s practice. These phrases talk about “likelihood” and
“probability” yet again. So let’s get to it.
Roza
▶︎ We can really add extra nuance to our phrases by choosing to lengthen or shorten
certain words. So pay attention to that, and let’s try together.
David
▶︎ All right. Here we go!
・She may be late.
・She may or may not be late.
Roza
▶︎ OK. Next example,
・She might be late.
Let’s try that one more time with the shorten “might.”
・She might be late.
Do you feel the difference in nuance between those two?
David
▶︎ All right. Let’s continue.
・You may very well meet them.
・You may well meet them.
・It’s not entirely you’ll see her there.
・It’s not unlikely you’ll see her there.
