実例あげて取り上げていきます。

Lesson 57 発言タイプ：約束する① 約束の基本表現

👉約束する① 約束の基本表現
▶︎日常頻繁に使われる「約束」表現を学びましょう。

会話の場面

登場人物

・アンドロイドのジーニー (Jeannie)とフランキー (Frankie)

状況

・ジーニーがサングラスをファンションとしてサングラスをかけていることに、
フランキーが質問すると ….

Opening で

Roza
▶︎ Hey, everyone. Akino Roza here.

David
▶︎ And I’m David Evans. Hi, everyone. Let’s get started.

Dialogue で

① Frankie, why are you looking at me like that? 【like that のフレーズ】
👉さあ、ここでは looking at me like that – この like that というフレーズが
　出てきましたね。注意してください。「そんな風に」というフレーズです。

② You are wearing sunglasses today.【sunglasses 複数形】
👉さあ、ここで sunglasses という単語が出てきました。もちろん複数形です。
レンズが２つあるからですね。

③ Your visual sensors adjust for brightness, right?
【adjust のニュアンス】
👉そして、adjust「調整する」という動詞が出てきました。just は「ピッタリ」
というイメージをもった単語ですね。「ピッタリにする」そこから
「調整する」ですよ。

④ I hope not. 【英語は not を勘定に含まない】
👉さあ、I hope not. ここで、not がついているのは、前の This will not happen again.
を受けて、I hope not. と言っているわけですね。
▶︎英語は、文脈の否定を勘定に入れません。ですから、ここで not -「それが起こらない」
と繰り返し使っているわけです。

Practice

David
▶︎ OK, everyone. It’s time for practice today. Are you ready?
The key here is “speed.” “Slow” equals “serious.” “Slow” equals “heavy.”
So if you speak slowly and naturally, you’re going to come across as
very serious with these phrases. But for these, it’s OK.

Roza
▶︎ Here I want you to think about what is important and emphasized in
English. So let’s try it.

David
▶︎ Let’s practice together.
・I will be yours forever.
・I’ll never leave you.
・I’ll never do it again.
・I’ll pay you back double.

Roza
▶︎ Do you guys hear how David emphasized words like “never” and “double”?
Great work. Here’s one more.
・I promise. ×２
You heard the emphasis on “promise,” right?

David
▶︎ All right. And these next ones use “I’ll see what I can do.”
This is a very common chunk of speech. So remember it, and put it
in your pocket. Here we go!
・I’ll see what I can do, but I can’t promise anything.
・I’ll see what I can do, but I’m making any promises.

▶︎ You were excellent.

▶︎ Great work, everyone.

▶︎ Hey, David. Are you going to Hokkaido next month?

David
▶︎ I think I might … yes.

▶︎ Can you bring me back some uni?

David
▶︎ I’ll bring you back the highest quality uni. I promise.
Umm, I’m not sure I can keep that promise. I say that.
