「日本語を経由せず、英語を使う力」を養います。

👉 see の「見える」は、「心が映像をとらえている」- 深く心理と関わっている
※ Lesson 42 から「感覚を表す動詞」の学習に入っています。

Opening で

Roza
▶︎ Hey, everyone. Akino Roza here.
Can’t you see I’m busy?

Chris
▶︎ I can’t see you’re busy. You guys, just stop chatting,
and concentrate now, OK? Chris McVay here.

Dialogue で

① Renji, stop playing that game.
👉さあ、この言葉 stop playing that game と、stop の後ろに
動名詞 ing形が使われていますよね。
▶︎ stop は、to不定詞ではなくて、「〜することをやめる」という時には
動詞 ing形をとります。
▶︎こうした動詞を、私はリアリティ動詞と呼んでいるんですよね。
何か実際に起こっている、具体的なことがなければ、それをやめる
ことができない – だから ing形と結びつくといった具合です。

② Mom, can’t you see I’m busy? – see の【発音】
👉さあ、この see という動詞ですね。
これは、本当にですね、僕いつも感じることなんですよね。
これを「シー」と読む方が何人かいらっしゃるんですね。
「シー」ではなく、「スィー」なんだということ、しっかり頭に
刻みつけておいてくださいね。

③ I’ll do it this afternoon.
👉さあ、ここで I’ll do it this afternoon.
in this afternoon とはなっていないことに注意してくださいね。
▶︎ this afternoon, that afternoon – this や that こうした指示を強く
表す単語がついた時に、in はもういらない、ということをしっかりと
覚えておきましょう。

④ I got the message.
👉さあ、ここの I got the message. これは
「言い分はわかった」というわけですね。「伝わりましたよ」という
ことですね。まあ、こうした状況でよく使われるフレーズだと思います。

Practice

▶︎ It’s practice time. Now guys, I’m sure you remember the direction
of “look” is outwards while the direction of “see” is inwards.
Therefore it’s natural for “see” to have the meaning of thinking,
understanding, imagining, checking – all our inside mental activities.
So let’s practice these.

Roza
▶︎ And think in English.

Chris
▶︎ The first one is a great example.
・I see.
It’s crazy to say “I look.” because “look” is only outwards.
We need an inwards motion here.
So let’s practice together.
・I see.
・as you can see / as I see it / as far as I can see

Roza
▶︎ Let’s continue.
・I can’t see him as a lawyer.
・I’ll see what I can do.

▶︎ Continuing on!
・See who’s at that door, will you?
