👉1月は、限定詞・名詞関連・接続詞のイメージについて学習します。
今週から、「接続詞」を扱っています。

Lesson 19８主要接続詞③：流れを打ち消す but

but「しかし」▶︎先行する文脈と相反する内容を導く、「流れを打ち消す」接続詞

Opening

Roza
▶︎ Hey, Chris. That jacket is quite bright. But surprisingly it suits you.

Chris
▶︎ Well, you know, I wanted to change my image. So there you go.

Roza
▶︎ Akino Roza here.

Dialogue で

① I wanted to change my image a bit.
👉さあ、wanted to というフレーズが出てきましたね。
動詞句的内容「〜すること」を目的語とする時に、want は ing ではなくて、
to 不定詞しか選ぶことが出来ません。それは、want が「これからすることを
欲する」という動詞だからです。矢印のイメージをもつ、to 不定詞がピッタリだ、
というわけです。

② It suits you.
👉さあ、suit という動詞が出てきました。
「似合う」という動詞ですね。しっかりと覚えておきましょう。

Practice

.Chris
▶︎ It’s practice, practice, practice time.
Today we’re going to practice another conjunction, “but.”
Now the main point to remember about “but” is that it blocks the flow.
・I like him … Buf … “but” stop. And the sentence moves off in another
direction. – I hate his sense of humor.
So this, “Buf,” blocking the flow image, keep in your mind, OK?
Here we go.
・strict but kind
・not a doctor but a teacher
・He spoke Japanese but couldn’t read it.

Roza
▶︎ And the next line is when the “but” comes in. So listen for that.

A: How about a bunch of roses for your girlfriend’s birthday?
B: But we split last week. (by Chris)

Chris
▶︎ OK. Some more.
・Excuse me, but can you turn the music down, please?
・Sorry, but can you turn the music down, please?

Roza
▶︎ And our last example.
・Yes, but have you taken into account the maintenance costs?
・Yeah, but have you taken into account the maintenance costs?

Chris
▶︎ Well done, guys.

Roza
▶︎ You did great. But keep in mind you still need to practice, practice,
practice.

Ending

Onishi
▶︎ A bunch of roses for a birthday present, impressive, isn’t it?

Chris
▶︎ Well, I think my generation would find it romantic.

Roza
▶︎ Well, I find it a waste. I would much prefer something luxurious that
I wouldn’t buy for myself, like a luxury towel.

Words and Phrases

⑤ luxury と luxurious
👉 Ending では、どちらも形容詞として使われていますが、
luxury は基本的に名詞で「高級品、贅沢品」
luxurious はその形容詞で「高級な、贅沢な」という意味になります。
▶︎ただし、luxury は名詞とつなげて「高級ブランドの〜」のような意味で
形容詞的に使われることもあります。
